"HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER" Learn English by watching American Sitcom
Watch TV and learn English easily in no time!
Research on language acquisition like this study in the Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior supports a popular language learning technique called “spaced repetition.” It involves reviewing new material (like a vocabulary list, for example) at regular intervals over a period of time. Typically, the intervals between reviews get longer and longer each time. So instead of cramming (memorizing all at once) 100 new words every day, learners should space out their training sessions across a week or even a month.
Today, we will talk about how to use repetition method to learn English from the SitCom.
For the average English students, speaking English fluently like a native speaker is tough. But it doesn’t have to be. But do you know that one easy way out is to watch TV and learn English? In the US, sitcoms are very common. Today let’s take a look at how to learn English using "HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER".
What is a Sitcom?
Sitcom is the abbreviation of situational comedy. It’s a type of television comedy that features the same regular cast of characters reacting to a range of funny, unusual and embarrassing situations. It’s usually set in the same place each week, like a family home or a workplace.
Introducing "How I met your Mother"
There are so many sitcoms to watch and discover today. You can watch it easily on Netflix or any other app using your PC’s, laptops or even smartphones. For beginner students who are looking to study English, I will recommend a Sitcom I had a lot of fun with - Mind your language. But for intermediate students, I will recommend “How I met your Mother”
Background of the Story
How I met your Mother is an interesting and funny series. If you are watching from Episode 1, it’s a little bit difficult to understand at the beginning because it’s set in the future – in the year 2030. However, once you get used to the idea of a show being set so far ahead of time, you’ll really enjoy it!
The main character is Ted Mosby. Ted is retelling the story to his kids of how and when he met his wife (their mom). Ted’s story began in 2005 when he was 27 years old. He was inspired to get married after his best friend from college got engaged.
However, Ted’s friend Barney, who is a big womanizer (Someone who likes and dates many women at the same time), is not very happy about Ted’s plan mainly because he will no longer have anyone to go out with and find dates. The story is retold to his kids over the series and there are a number of different version of stories related to all of Ted’s friends.
Suitable English Level: high beginners to intermediate
This series is suitable for high beginners to intermediate students who are aspiring to learn the native American accent. Personally, I learned a lot of words and how to pronounce them in this series.
